Antiperspirant Can Cause Cancer and Alzheimer’s

May 13th, 2010 · 2 Comments · Common ailments, Health

With the weather warming up, you’re probably getting out that deodorant a lot more.   But are you slowly poisoning your body?

Some gigantic problems with antiperspirant

  • Antiperspirants prevent toxins accumulated in the body from being eliminated through the armpits.
  • Most antiperspirants contain aluminum, which is a toxin according to the World Health Organization (WHO).  In 1993, the WHO stated “There is a suspected link between Alzheimer’s disease and the toxicity of aluminum.”
  • A 2007 British study found that aluminum causes cancer in animals.  They also discovered that breast cancer patients using antiperspirant had aluminum deposits in the outer breast tissue.
  • A 2006 study found that aluminum can mimic estrogen.  Chemicals that imitate estrogen were found to increase breast cancer risk.

Difference between antiperspirant and deodorant

  • Antiperspirants use chemicals to block pores and prevent sweat (and also toxins in the body) from exiting.
  • Deodorants allow perspiration but mask the odor and/or kill the bacteria causing the odor.  So deodorants are a much safer option than antiperspirants!

What kind of deodorant can I trust?

  • Make sure there are no aluminum or parabens (also linked to breast cancer) inside.
  • Avoid those with artificial colors or aromas.  Generally, if it says fragrance or perfume, it’s artificial.
  • One of my favorite’s is Toms Of Maine Deodorant – natural and pure ingredients and it works.  Another good company is Aubrey Organics, and they have roll-on as well as spray deodorants.
